Information about the European Center for Theater Practices “Gardzienice”

The Center for Theater Practices GARDZIENICE, founded in 1977 by Włodzimierz Staniewski, became well-known thanks to its in-depth research in the field of indigenous and ancient musical traditions, exceptional acting techniques (body, voice), thanks to commitment to creating theater in a natural environment and emphasizing the principles of reciprocity and musicality at work. Staniewski’s acting method, known as the ecology of theater, is mentioned as one of the most important in the 20th century.

For years, the center functioned in a rented hall of the palace in Gardzienice, then in the palace outbuilding, and was deprived of the basic infrastructure necessary for artistic and didactic work. In 2008, the authorities of the Lubelskie Voivodeship handed over to the Center the palace in Gardzienice along with the second of the palace outbuildings (the so-called Mały Outbuilding).

The project to build the European Center for Theater Practices included the renovation, reconstruction and adaptation for the needs of the Gardzienice Center for Theater Practices of four buildings of the palace complex in Gardzienice along with their surroundings: the palace, the northern palace outbuilding, the granary from the end of the 19th century and the farm building, the so-called sheds.

Comprehensive renovation of the palace included the strengthening of the building’s structure, replacement of the roof and all installations. The interiors have been restored to the original two-bay spatial layout with the reconstruction of the original enfilade sequences of the rooms by returning to the original door openings and removing the contemporary partition walls. The great hall on the ground floor, existing in the 18th century, was restored. According to iconographic evidence, the main entrance has been moved to the axis of the northern wing. The late 19th and 20th century brickwork was removed. The attic (workshops, wardrobes) as well as the basements were used, which now serve as exhibition rooms. Outside the building, on the west side (escarpment), the remains of the former castle, discovered during archaeological research conducted in 2009-2010, are exposed.

In the Granary, it was necessary to demolish the old structure. In its place, a new “industrial” convention was erected, based on reinforced concrete ceilings and a steel roof structure. This convention is continued in the steel structure of columns, binders, balustrades, balconies, elevator structures, and other architectural elements and details. After the reconstruction, the building, keeping the external shape, gained two additional floors: attic and basement.

The western part is filled with a theater room covering all three floors.

The Mała Oficyna has undergone a comprehensive renovation, including the liquidation of the existing wallsn partitions, reconstruction of the staircase to the attic in order to adapt it to the applicable technical and functional requirements and reconstruction of the arcaded arcade on the west side.

The farm building was demolished and a Trials and Assembly Hall was erected in its place, with the central main hall, connected with the external stage through sliding doors.

Referring to the tradition of the palace park in Gardzienice, two gardens were also created: the so-called “Magic Garden” and “Japanese Garden”.
