HIPPOLYTOS
according to Eurypides
in adaptation of Thiasos Theatre from London
Directed by: MJ Coldiron, Yana Sistovari
Here is Greek tragedy as you have not seen it before: songs in ancient Greek,
dance and masks from Bali and Java, spoken word in English, narration in Polish.
A story of love and betrayal of people who became a plaything in the hands of the gods. Exciting
spectacle with a lot of dance, music and words.
The Thiasos Theatre in its adaptation of Euripides’ tragedy Hippolytos restores the singing and
The singing and dancing choir is restored to its original central place. Euripides’ text is sung in ancient Greek, preserving its tonality and rhythm.
All other elements of the performance are fresh; the narrator (the excellent Jarosław
Gajewski) succinctly announces the development of the plot and the characters – gods and mortals – play their roles in the style of the Balinese mask dance theatre Topeng. The choir presents a form of Jaipongan
Jaipongan dance form based on traditional motifs from West Java.
The Polish realisation of the performance was a co-production of Thiasos Theatre and Gardzienice Theatre.
Presentations took place in Gardzienice and at Teatr Polski in Warsaw in May 2016.
