Debjaya Sarkar is a remarkable performer of Kathak dance originating from West Bengal, India. She began her dancing journey at the age of four under the guidance of Swapna Roy. Later, she trained with Chandrani Mukherjee Roy and Alok Chowdhury at Alipurduar. She took advanced classes with
prof. Amita Dutta, Madhumita Roy and guru Malti Shyam. She also pursued periodic training with Birju Maharaj, Bidushi Saswati Sen, Rajendra Gangani, and others.
In 2010, she was awarded a first-class Master Degree in Kathak dance from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata. In the same year, she obtained a national scholarship from the Indian Ministry of Culture and five years later, she was recognised with the Golden Medal from Akhil Bharatiya Sangeet Pratiyogita. Since 2021, she has been an A-Grade artist at the Central Dance Audition Board of Doordarshan Directorate, New Delhi
Debjaya is affiliated with various institutions, such as the Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture amongst the Youth in New Delhi, the Indian International Rural Cultural Centre in New Delhi and the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre in Kolkata.
She regularly performs throughout India and abroad (in Malaysia, China and Singapore, among others). On top of that, she serves as the president of the Rudraksh Performing Arts Centre in Alipurduar. Since 2014, she has been associated with two community projects: Ananter Khoje, dedicated to children with disabilities, and Prajna, aimed at supporting dancing talents in tribal communities.
She participated in the 2014 India, India… festival at the Gardzienice Theatre. Before that, in 2012, she took part in the performance of the Master Builder, directed by Staniewski (which premiered in New Delhi, as part of the Ibsen Festival).
