Krzysztof Zanussi

The greatest contemporary figure of Polish culture with international recognition.

A film and theatre director, author of outstanding texts, and above all – a thinker.

His films are often described as philosophical essays.

He speaks captivatingly, with elegance, precision, and wit, encompassing so many realms of thought that we envision him on the agora, clad in a draped chiton, in the circle of Socrates’ companions, or at a Platonic symposium.

In the interview-book The Solitude of Faust, Krzysztof Zanussi reflected on the themes of old age and departure, which he had already touched upon in his diploma film The Death of a Provincial (1965):

“From today’s perspective I see
that a fascination of youth with old age and of old age with youth has accompanied me throughout my whole life;
it seems to me to be a magnificent, universal theme.”
