History of the glorious Resurrection of Christ

The performance “History of the glorious Resurrection of Christ” by Mikołaj from Wilkowiecko is a co-production of J. Osterwa Theatre in Lublin and the “Gardzienice” Centre for Theatre Practices. This is the first joint venture which combines the work of repertory theatre actors with the experience of actors using innovative theatre practices. For the religious audience, staging a mystery play can be an experience connected with the sacral sphere. For a person who is close to native cultural traditions, it will be an opportunity of contact with a living monument. For everyone, it will be an unusual story of how life triumphs over death.
In their work on the performance, the artists combine various worlds: sacrum and profanum, everyday life with religiousness, the contemporary with the ancient. The actors from the J. Osterwa Theatre and “Gardzienice” will be accompanied on stage by live music performed on ancient instruments. Professor Maria Pomianowska is responsible for the musical setting of the performance. The most interesting group are reconstructed Old Polish knee fidgets. The ensemble also plays a medieval fiddle and backwards, as well as aerophones: cornamus, zinnia, pomort, simple flutes and duduk, and hoop drums. A very important role in the performance is played by vocal and vocal-instrumental pieces for solo voices and choir.
Work on the performance is also work with the Polish language. The work of Mikołaj from Wilkowiecko is one of the oldest Polish dramas. It gives the artists a pretext and an opportunity to discuss the language, to face the difficulty of the Old Polish language, at the same time showing the audience its beauty and universality. The artists also strongly emphasise the importance of language in building our national identity, and theatre is the place to research on this discource.
The Old Polish text, the skills of repertory theatre actors and the group from Gardzienice, the music and instruments in the hands of director Jarosław Gajewski create a performance that will provide the audience with extraordinary emotions.
