Painting by Piotr Tymochowicz – “Abandoned Heritage” exhibition
available from September 11, 2020 to visitors at the Palace of the Theater in Gardzienice.
“The past is what defines us most in the present world. The need to be identified with a fragment of the real part of our life, region, land, tradition, home, to merge with some part of what was and is in every human being. Sometimes the confrontation is a surprise, an attempt to understand the passage of time and the changes that time brings to real objects. And these changes can sometimes be significant. We feel obligated to belong to a place that reflects our life needs.
What if a place that has become close to our identity, with which we feel a strong bond, no longer exists? Or what is left of him is far from the original idea of him? We often pass completely abandoned houses, manor houses, building sinkholes, incomplete and non-functional. What were they once? What did they mean? Do they have the features of previous household members, are they inhabited or will they be forgotten? What is the story that binds them, that today they are only a small fragment of memories of their former glory.
Old houses, cottages, have found their special place in the work of Piotr Tymochowicz, who with their age and idyllic nature can emphasize the modernity of industrial interiors of galleries and museums, which are the background of the original buildings in the painting.
In the artist’s paintings, these seemingly dilapidated, centuries-old houses take on a new aesthetic, becoming something very decorative. Rusty roofs, defective wall boards or defects in the structure give their bodies a stronger expression. The progressive degradation seems to be stopped in time, it does not progress anymore at this moment, it lasts like a moment. Building fragments, ruins of huts seem to be stuck in a safe point, allowing them to survive relatively, not only in our memory, but on the canvas. And when in the real world their time runs out, and brick by brick will be dismantled, and in their place, or not a newer equivalent, their silhouettes will still shimmer among the recesses of our memories. ” fragm. by Zuzanna Zubek – Gańska
