DISHARMONY AKIM ODA

I have always been intrigued by the fact that the faces of most people I have had the chance to observe were distinctly asymmetrical. When speaking to someone, I would sometimes get the impression that I was not talking to just one person—especially when a person’s facial expression changed under the influence of emotion. These changes could be so fluid that, from one moment to the next, the face would take on an entirely new form.

Combining two left halves or two right halves accentuates this asymmetry, and enhancing the difference through uneven face painting creates a strikingly beautiful image.

As part of a workshop in Ghana organised by Wojciech Zaremba, the project Disharmony Akim Oda was created. In pairs, ten local photographers painted one another.

The portraits were taken against backgrounds featuring fragments of paintings by the Ghanaian artist Toney Teneth Blankson.
