Mona – a book about Mira Żelechower-Aleksiun

“Mona” is a fascinating story about one person, the painter Mira Żelechower-Aleksiun (…) It is a story about artistic creativity, about building meaning, about finding tradition – also religious. (…)

I am grateful to the author, Monika Braun, for her approach to delicate topics – without the conceit so often in contemporary deliberations. The following scenes are sketched in a painterly manner – and they are deeply related to the pictures of the book’s heroine.

The book about Mira Żelechower-Aleksiun is beautifully written by Monika Braun. As if in one breath, in which close and distant lives magically intertwine. As in Mira’s paintings. And it is read in one breath. A stream of life captured in a stream of words. The heroine’s fate is extraordinary. As if she lived in many dimensions. Not only in the imagination, but physically. One, close to the body as a shirt, like the address book of a hotel called life, where we were next door to door and knocked on each other for the given time. The second – distant, tragically departed, at the antipodes of memory, now mythical … Mira’s search for this second dimension is a special argonautic. From these journeys, so dangerous for her own balance and identity, the heroine brings back real treasures and generously shares with us.
