SUPERMARKET AND NATIONAL VOODOO

SUPERMARKET AND NATIONAL VOODOO

PERFORMANCE of the X ACADEMY FOR THEATRE PRACTICES (2011-2012)

based on Andrzej Stasiuk’s “Diary kept afterwards”

SUPERMARKET AND NATIONAL VOODOO is a lively, theatrical and musical interpretation of fragments of Andrzej Stasiuk’s “Diary kept afterwards.” The text, which is sung, recited and rapped becomes the springboard for the creation of ambiguous theatrical mosaic, which is a (self-) ironic attempt to describe the reality of post-communist Poland, in which national myths mingle with consumer lifestyles.

Like Stasiuk’s book, the performance is a kind of journey through places and situations specific to the cultural landscape of contemporary Poland: from a pilgrimage to the Marian sanctuary in Lichen, through funeral marches, rallies, a queue at the train station and sale in the mall or a night at the disco party and the Sunday Mass.

Through the video clip scenes, based on Oberek rhythms, hip – hop and techno and through fervently recited lines one can hear the voice of a generation of those who experienced the last moments of communism and the first who struggled with predatory capitalism, consumption and globalization era.
